Emma Charlotte Duerre Watson was born in Paris France to British parents Jacqueline Luesby and Chris Watson who were both lawyers. The couple was moved to Oxfordshire in the year she turned five and enrolled in the Dragon School. From the age of six Emma was aware she would like to be an actress and for many years she studied at the Oxford Branch of Stagecoach Theatre Arts a part-time theatre school in which she was taught the art of acting and dancing. By the time she turned 10, Emma had taken part in a variety of Stagecoach productions and plays. Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone is the film from 2001 adaptation from J.K. Rowling's bestselling book was filmed in 1999. Casting agents discovered Emma through her Oxford theatre instructor. David Heyman, the producer of Harry Potter Harry Potter's Sorcerer's Stone, and Ron Weasley told Emma after 8 auditions, that she had been selected for the characters. She was cast alongside Daniel Radcliffe Rupert Grint and Rupert Grint. Emma's first film on the screen was Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, released in 2001. The film was also the film that was most popular in 2001. Opening weekend and day the sales were record breaking. Reviewers were awed by the film and its performance. The Daily Telegraph, an important British newspaper, called Emma's performance "amazing". In the following days, Emma was nominated for five awards for her performance in the film and was awarded her the Young Artist Award for Leading Actress Young in a feature Film.
